The renowned mezzo-soprano Joanna Simon, an Emmy-winning TV correspondent, and the composer Lucy Simon passed away within a day of one another last week, according to a statement released by Carly Simon on Sunday.
Carly Simon released a statement in which she expressed her sorrow for the deaths of Joanna and Lucy Simon. “Their grief will linger for a very long time. Even though this is a sad day, it would be impossible to grieve them without also honoring the amazing lives they led.”
According to Lucy Simon’s daughter Julie Simon, the oldest of the four children, Joanna Simon passed away on Wednesday, one day before her sister Lucy. They lost their photographer brother Peter in 2018 at the age of 71. They all have the disease.
Simon recalled the three sisters as being each other’s secret shares in addition to taking turns blazing paths and setting out courses for one another. “the joint caretakers of one another’s memories. The feeling of suddenly becoming the only living child of Richard and Andrea Simon directly cannot be expressed in words.”

In the 1960s, Joanna Simon gained national attention in the opera world and as a concert singer. She passed away at the age of 85 from thyroid cancer. She frequently appeared on chat shows on television. Her reporting on mental illness and creativity earned her an Emmy in 1991 after she gave up singing to work as an arts journalist for PBS’s “MacNeil-Lehrer NewsHour.”
Gerald Walker, a writer and journalist, was Joanna Simon’s husband from 1976 until his passing in 2004. From 2005 till his passing in 2009, she was Walter Cronkite’s companion.
At the New York City Opera, she made her theatrical debut as Cherubino in Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro” in 1962. She received the Marian Anderson Award that year for talented young singers. Simon worked with various areas. She gravitated toward timeless and modern music from her era when she was performing in concerts.
The children were born to publishing mogul Richard Simon and his wife, Andrea. As the Simon Sisters, Carly and Lucy used to perform at Greenwich Village folk clubs as openers for other musicians.
The score of “The Secret Garden,” written by 82-year-old Lucy Simon, received a Tony nomination. CNN reports that she passed away from metastatic breast cancer.
