Following a diagnosis of aphasia, Bruce Willis said in a statement that he would be “stepping aside” from acting. However, a Los Angeles Times story has shown that worries about his cognitive health have been prevalent for years.
The report quotes directors and other crew members who had worked with the 67-year-old actor about his difficulties remembering lines of speech, expressing confusion at his surroundings, demanding shorter workdays, and having difficulty with gun use.
Out of Death director Mike Burns said why he was requested to cut Bruce’s lines: “After the first day of working with Bruce, I could see it first-hand, and I recognized that there was a greater problem at play here and why I had been asked to shorten his lines.” He had to reduce 25 pages of dialogue into one day of filming during the production.
After Burns expressed his concerns about the project, a colleague assured him that Willis was in much better form. However, Burns quickly discovered that this was not the case after the film had begun filming.
The statement made by Burns was, “I didn’t believe he was better; I felt he was worse.” I said, “I’m done,” once we were done. I won’t be doing any further films starring Bruce Willis. His taking a break is a relief to me.
