But after they arrived at the river in Ningbo, eastern China, things went from bad to worse.

Wu’s brother then called the fire department, who arrived on the spot and assisted Jun in getting out of the water.

‘She was transported to the hospital but was released shortly after without any significant injuries,’ said a rescue worker.

The story rapidly went viral in China, where there is a chronic scarcity of women due to the country’s one-child policy, which meant parents preferred male newborns. As a result, there are millions of single men who will never marry because they are unable to find partners.
