Jannet Talbott noticed a little squirrel eating from the bird feeder she had for her finches in June 2018 as she was performing yard maintenance on her lovely property in Alberta. The squirrel appeared to be struggling, and something odd was coming from his head, which she also saw.
Jannet observed that the poor squirrel’s long, crooked teeth prevented him from chewing nuts and bark as he would normally be able to. His teeth were so much longer than they usually were, which caused this. Even the four front teeth on his upper arch were shifting to the back of his mouth.
After recognizing that the squirrel wouldn’t live as long if he couldn’t close his mouth or chew the food he ate, Jannet made the decision to bring the squirrel inside and take care of his teeth herself.
She started the delicate process by placing the squirrel in a towel and viewing YouTube tutorials on how to clip squirrel teeth. She next removed the squirrel’s teeth.
Watch “Bucky” today.
Since she was a child, Jannet Talbott has volunteered her time to help animals.
Regardless of the type of animal, she would care for any wounded animal at her home.
Owning the Double J Freedom Ranch in Alberta, not far from Barrhead, makes Jannet proud.
She works there with horses and rescues dogs, helping in placing them in loving homes.
The animal sanctuary that Jannet maintains is in her backyard. It’s breathtaking, isn’t it?
She claims, “I feel a profound kinship with animals and a responsibility to be their voice and speak out for them.” I have a close relationship with animals.
A cute tiny sabertooth squirrel was seen munching some seeds from Jannet’s bird feeder in June 2018 as she was working in her yard. The weather was clear and sunny.
However, he was having issues.
She noticed something odd as she turned her attention to the side of his face.
Jannet observed the squirrel’s thinness and the way its teeth had grown so large that they were bent backward after giving it a closer look.
Squirrels have four front teeth, which continue to grow throughout their lifespan. But the nuts and tree bark they consume usually reduce the size of their teeth to a more tolerable level.
The squirrel’s ability to solely consume food intended for finches led Jannet to conclude that it must have been born with an odd bite. He put his life in danger since he couldn’t chew his meal or close his lips properly.
The proponent of animal rights realized she had to intervene to try to save his life.
The squirrel was rescued from under the bird feeder by Jannet using the leather gardening gloves she kept in her shed. “Bucky” was given to him when she brought him inside.
She used YouTube to educate herself on how to trim a squirrel’s teeth.
Once she had him wrapped in a towel and brought him into the examination room, Jannet could see her new dental patient more clearly.
As a result of their length and curve, Bucky’s two front teeth came perilously close to piercing his eyes.
His calmness and dignity throughout the challenging do-it-yourself dental operation, according to Jannet, made him a “model patient.” Since squirrels do not have nerve endings in their front teeth, Bucky did not feel much pain.
I think animals can see when people are attempting to help them, the woman says. “I have no doubts at all.”
Janett clipped off Bucky’s abnormally long teeth before letting him go back into the wild with a regular cuticle cutter. This was completed prior to Janett releasing Bucky.
Please look at him right away!
You must feel so much better after reading that, Jannet wrote on Facebook. (Requires citation)
According to Janet, ground-up, shelled sunflower seeds were the sole item that kept Bucky alive.
However, she was overjoyed to discover that he could now consume whole peanuts the following day after giving him his new set of teeth.
As Bucky ran up the tree and, for the first time, was able to rub his cheeks on the bark, she observed.
I observed him using a tree branch to round the edges of his freshly trimmed front teeth. My fingers are crossed that he can keep wearing them down.
Take a moment to observe that smile.
Given that Bucky’s teeth might eventually continue to grow incorrectly, Jannet is more than willing to watch over him. And if Bucky ever needs it, she’s prepared to help him once more.
I would never attempt to do diy surgery on a wild animal. I would have taken him to a wildlife rehabilitation center.
She did a great thing. Bucky looks happy.
