According to Japanese authorities, an individual who pretended to be an astronaut and defrauded a 65-year-old woman out of millions of yen has raised the bar for international romantic fraud.
According to reports, the scam started when the two communicated on Instagram on June 28. The fraudster, whose identity is still unknown, pretended to be a Russian cosmonaut employed by the International Space Station (ISS).
The two soon became romantically involved. Finally, the “astronaut” expressed his desire to wed the elderly Japanese, but he insisted that he would need money before he could leave the International Space Station (ISS).
“Even if I repeat it a thousand times and it still doesn’t make sense, I’ll keep saying it.”The con artist allegedly told the woman, “I love you.”
The victim was tricked into sending 4.4 million yen (about $30,238) in total between August 19 and September 5. She was suspicious since her “boyfriend” kept asking for more.
The victim, who resides in Higashi-Omi, Shiga Prefecture, ultimately made the decision to file a police case. If there are any questionable leads, it is unknown as of the time of publication.
Police have, however, cautioned people to be wary of these scams. The red flags, in this case, were obvious right away since the fraudster complained about having bad phone coverage in the ISS even though there was no mobile service at the station itself.
He also claimed inaccurately that the ISS was run like an airport, complete with tickets.Online opinions on the matter have since been divided. While some expressed sorrow for the victim, others called attention to the ridiculousness of the stunt.
According to SoraNews24, one social media user stated that this goes above and beyond an “international” romantic fraud.
Another commented, “I believe they deliberately make the story absurd like that, so when the victim eventually does learn they’re more likely to be too ashamed to report it.”
What do you think about this international romantic scam? Do you know anyone who has experienced a similar situation? Please let us know, and don’t forget to spread the news so that we can hear from more people.
Scammers are more disgusting than a cockroach infestation… but having said that, some people just seem to have no common sense whatsoever. I’m reminded of the story I heard a few years ago about a guy who put on a white lab coat, a name tag that said “Dr. So and so, M.D.” and was going around a neighborhood offering “free breast cancer exams”. The really funny part was there were a few women who actually let him in and he did some “exams” before the cops caught him.
Loneliness is such a devastating emotion,This jerk will regret doing this to this lady he’s going to reap what he showed.
