At least 207 families in southwest China mourned the loss of loved ones in a violent earthquake that struck them suddenly.
Since the 6.6 magnitude quake, the region has been shaken by 1,300 aftershocks, with state media reporting that 11,500 people have been hurt, 960 of them critically.
The situation remained terrible as rescuers raced to reach remote settlements devastated by the earthquake.
At least 186 people were killed, over 11,000 were injured, and about two dozen individuals went missing in Sichuan province’s earthquake, which struck largely in rural areas around Ya’an city. Along the same fault line, a severe quake to the north killed over 90,000 people in Sichuan and nearby regions in one of China’s deadliest natural catastrophes many years ago.

Despite the devastation, two small miracles have emerged, serving as symbols of hope in the middle of the destruction.
According to Reuters, rescuers in Sichuan province could save a three-month-old baby. During the earthquake, the baby’s mother died.
The young girl survived the quake and was admitted to the care of medics, despite the fact that her mother was lost in the disaster.
Meanwhile, new mother Zhou Chunzhi gave birth to her baby in a makeshift operating room built up in Ya’an People’s Hospital just two hours after the disaster.
According to the People’s Daily Online, she has been given the name ‘Zhensheng,’ which means ‘born on the day of the earthquake .’ according to the People’s Daily Online.
How Did The Public React To This Miraculous Incident?
As the public expressed their love and support for the newborn girl and her family on the Chinese microblogging service Weibo, the baby girl and her family have been bombarded with messages of well-wishes.
‘I will pray for the kid, and I wish her all the best,’ wrote one user using the profile name ‘yinqingyouxin.’ My baby was born on the night of the Wenchuan earthquake five years ago. I understand how the mother feels.’
That afternoon, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang arrived in Ya’an by helicopter to direct rescue efforts.
‘Right now, the essential thing is to save lives,’ Li said after touring hospitals and tents and climbing onto a pile of rubble to survey the damage.
How Did The Government React To The Disaster?
Many individuals were at home, napping or eating breakfast when the earthquake occurred shortly after 8 a.m.
As aftershocks continued to shake the region, tens of thousands of residents moved into tents or vehicles, unable or scared to return home.
Residents in Ya’an sat in gatherings outside convenience stores, watching tv news.
Thousands of soldiers and others have been deployed, as well as excavators and other heavy machinery, as well as tents, blankets, and other emergency supplies.
