Doctor Who Performed Miraculous Surgery On An Unborn Baby

Dr. Oluyinka Olutoye, a Nigerian physician, joined a team of specialists from Texas to perform a rare surgery on a baby in a mother’s womb, and the story has gone viral on social media. Meet Dr. Oluyinka O. Olutoye has accomplished what only a few doctors in the world can. It was one of the hardest surgeries ever performed.

In 2016, a Nigerian fetal and pediatric surgeon performed surgery on an unborn child in a Texas Children’s hospital. Olutoye and his colleague, Dr. Darrell Cass, co-led a team of 21 specialists to remove a S.C.T, a huge tumor from the baby’s tailbone.

Margaret was checked every two weeks to see how the tumor was progressing, and at 23 weeks pregnant, she learned that Lynlee’s heart was compromised and she was experiencing heart failure. She had to undergo surgery.

How Was This Surgery Done?

Margaret Boemer, according to CNN, went in for a regular ultrasound at 16 weeks and discovered the rare birth abnormality. She and her baby, LynLee, had a five-hour fetal operation when she was 23 weeks pregnant. The surgical team took the baby out of the uterus for 20 minutes to securely remove the tumor.

The mother and fetus were given anesthesia for the procedure, and the section of the fetus’ body where the tumor was attached was removed from the uterus.LynLee was then returned to the womb for the pregnancy, following which she was born healthy.

The infant was delivered naturally after 36 weeks and was in good health thanks to a rare medical procedure called Fetoscopic open neural tube defect correction.

The operation does not appear to have increased maternal-fetal problems, according to the Texas Children’s Fetal Center. On the other hand, the procedure allows for a vaginal birth, lowering long-term maternal risks.

What Did The Mother Say After The Surgery?

According to PEOPLE, the renowned operation took place in 2016, with Margaret Boemer, the baby’s mother, commenting, “I knew we were doing this to try and save her life.” That was all I could think about.”

After The Surgery

“There was a little amount of stress and nervousness,” the baby’s mother said at the time, “but I knew it was what needed to be done to give her life.”

Doctor Olutoye Became Very Famous After The Impossible Surgery

Olutoye was named Surgeon-In-Chief at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in the United States after his role in a revolutionary procedure. According to Face2Face Africa, he now supervises one of the world’s largest children’s hospital surgical departments.

“This is an exciting time to join the organization as we build on our already amazing accomplishment in providing surgical services to children across the country and increasingly around the world,” he said in a statement. “I’m excited to have the opportunity to lead and collaborate with this team in the next part of our journey.”

According to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Dr. Olutoye was appointed as a professor and the E. Thomas Boles chair of pediatric surgery at The Ohio State University College of Medicine in 2019.
