Even after Shannen Doherty received the all-clear for breast cancer back in 2017, it was her dog who discovered the tumor. At the time, the celebrity had radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and surgery to remove the cancerous lesion. “Bowie was once more somewhat nearby while I recovered from [cancer] surgery,” Doherty said to Entertainment Tonight.
“Then, after my initial chemotherapy, she would thoroughly sniff my entire body. She used to be quite protective, but now she’s a mad, protective dog. Being near her makes it challenging to approach me.”
After exercising and feeling “strange” back sensations, Doherty soon discovered that her cancer had returned.
However, this time the disease had progressed to her spine, and she has given a stage four diagnosis.
Even though she had a limited perspective on life, she told Elle magazine: “I’ve got a lot of life in me.”
Doherty wrote on Instagram that she was enjoying each moment for what it was: “21 days of a reset diet, and today was my cheat meal.
“I dove into fries, bread, and wine after avoiding carbs, sweets, and unprocessed foods. Also, dessert.
“Loved my cheat meal… I just want to be the best version of myself at this time. I’m not sure what that is, but I am aware that the beginning is healthy eating.
“I shall have one more dessert before returning to my healthy eating tomorrow.”
When she was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer, the actress who portrayed Prue on Charmed from 1998 to 2006 hadn’t “processed” it.
She told ABC News TV correspondent Amy Robach, “It’s a tough pill to chew in many ways.
Stage 4 Breast Cancer
It is also known as advanced cancer because the tumor has spread past its primary site, in Doherty’s instance, the breast.
Stage four breast cancer’s prognosis was highlighted by Cancer Research UK.
According to the charity, “around 25 out of every 100 women” (or 25%) will remain cancer-free for at least five years following diagnosis.
At this time, cancer cannot be cured, although it may be managed with treatment for a while.
Treatment options include hormone therapy, chemotherapy, medications with specific targets, radiotherapy, surgery, and bone-strengthening procedures.
What Purpose Does Treatment Serve?
Treatments may help to lessen symptoms and improve your overall feeling, according to Cancer Research UK.
However, they can have negative side effects that may leave you feeling ill for a time.
Symptoms of breast cancer
- your breast or armpit develops a new lump or thickness.
- Your breast’s size, shape, or sensation changing.
- Skin alterations in the breast, such as dimpling, puckering, rashes, or skin redness.
- A lady who is not pregnant or nursing has fluid leaking from her nipple.
- Changes to the nipple’s position.
In addition, the NHS notes that back or stomach pain, fatigue, and unexplained weight loss may be signs of cancer.
Make an appointment with a doctor if any symptoms make you nervous.

Do whatever you want to do my mum did
I was diagnosed with HER-2 Positive breast cancer in November 2021. The cancer was classified as “Stage 0” after a lumpectomy revealed the growth had been successfully removed and was contained. After ten months of chemo, radiation and Herceptin infusion treatments I was just declared cancer free. Diligence pays off. Know your body and keep your annual well woman and mammogram exams. This definitely saved my life.
