Every time Cesar Fernandez-Chavez takes his dog Louboutina on a walk in Manhattan, it’s never a normal walk. After only a few steps on the pavements, Louboutina (or Loubie for short) is eager to pause, greet people, and then give them a bear hug by wrapping her forelegs around their knees.
According to Fernandez-Chavez,”It’s a walk that includes hugs. So we don’t get to go too far.”
Fernandez-Chavez claims that Loubie learned how to do this on her own and that he never taught her.Loubie desired to hold hands before beginning to give hugs. After Fernandez-Chavez ended a long-term relationship, the custom began around Valentine’s Day in 2014.
According to Fernandez-Chavez, “she started sitting up and grabbing my hands with both of her paws, then crossing the other paw over her paw.” At least I had someone to hold hands with during Valentine’s Day. I remember joking with my buddies.
Loubie immediately discovered that holding hands was her favorite activity, and she liked to do this while taking walks in New York City.
Fernandez-Chavez claims that after that, “she wanted to hold hands on every walk.” “She would simply stand up, cross one paw over the other, and scan the area like a lady. Oh my my, she’s so cute, the passersby said.”
Later, after a few years, Loubie began expressing her love in a different way: by giving hugs.
Fernandez-Chavez explains, “Instead of asking me to do the holding hands thing, she just sat up, very near to my legs, and she’d wrap her legs over my knees. “I said, “This is strange.” What’s happening? But I still let her do it.”
Loubie kept giving hugs. And welcoming. and embracing. She occasionally struggled to get moving.
Depending on where I’m standing, Fernandez-Chavez continues, “She gets a really strong grasp.” I must ensure that I maintain a healthy balance.
Loubie didn’t take long to start hugging other people, either, so it’s a good thing Fernandez-Chavez isn’t the jealous type.
When we encountered familiar neighbors, according to Fernandez-Chavez, “she started hugging them instead of just leaning on them, and then random people who would come to us.”
Although Loubie is very generous with her hugs, Fernandez-Chavez claims that she only gives them to persons she connects with.
People will occasionally approach him and ask for a hug, but he will usually reply, “I don’t think it’s going to happen,” because she needs time to get to know them. However, I warn that you might get a hug if she is sitting close to someone.
Loubie seems to enjoy giving people hugs; else, she wouldn’t. And it’s obvious that the people she embraces agree.
It’s pleasing to see people leave with a smile, adds Fernandez-Chavez. “People praise the fact that this is happening on the street, particularly in light of recent events. She is making them happy. It’s quite satisfying.”
