After being diagnosed with a mystery illness, a mom explained how her newborn twins saved her life.
Jennifer French, 38, of LLechryd, Wales, had been suffering from severe symptoms for years but was only diagnosed after the birth of her second pair of twins, Rupert and Molly.Jennifer discovered she had serious liver failure after the twins were born, causing her skin to ‘rot’ and leaving her days away from death.
Even the slightest breeze on her skin caused her such suffering that she could not walk. Still, doctors were unable to determine the cause of her symptoms. The symptoms persisted, and when Jennifer’s twins were born prematurely and she began to bleed while driving, doctors discovered two blood clots in her liver.
Jennifer, who already had twins, 11-year-old Aerona and Salvador, and a five-year-old son, Joel, chose to undergo the contraceptive injection after birth.”I didn’t want any more babies after a surprising second set of twins,” she explains.
“I swelled up with fluid after the injection and seemed nine months pregnant again.” Doctors revealed I had a two-blood clot on my liver after a round of testing.
“The second one was most likely caused by the injection, while the first had been there for some time.” The clot caused my liver to expand, which resulted in all of my unusual symptoms.
“I was in severe liver failure at this stage.” I might not have survived much longer if they hadn’t caught it.”I can’t thank the physicians and surgeons enough – it was a tough journey, but we made it.”
“My children have spent most of their lives witnessing my misery and discomfort. Hopefully, I can assist others in recognizing the symptoms of liver failure and seeking medical attention. This is the first year my children will have a happy, healthy mother.
“In a strange sense, having my second twins saved my life.”Jennifer was eventually diagnosed with Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS), a liver disorder in which blood arteries shrink and clog. The mother was fitted with a stent in her liver to improve blood flow and is now pain-free.
Jennifer described how, over the course of the year, she had noticed the skin around her fingers and toes turning black, dyspnea, swelling in her legs, weight loss, and a yellow tinge to her complexion.
“The nerve ache from the chilblains was so awful all year,” she recalls.”I dressed like an Eskimo in the middle of July and could only spend 10 minutes outside at most.” I also experienced occasional shooting sensations while resting.
“I couldn’t lay down flat and ended up sleeping upright on the sofa for the following two years.”We’re relieved Jennifer received the assistance she required.
