When a postwoman in America realized an elderly lady hadn’t retrieved her mail in three days, she informed the police.
Kayla Berridge of New Hampshire told how she became concerned when she saw one of the women on her mail route hadn’t retrieved her mail from the post box for days, which was unusual for her.
Kayla had a gut instinct and decided to contact the police after noticing the mail had begun to pile up and being concerned for the lady’s safety. They learned that the lady had been stuck on the floor of her bedroom for three days, with Kayla saving her life by raising the alarm.
“I simply got a gut feeling and wanted to double-check,” Kayla explained to Channel 5 Boston.
“You begin to observe people’s habits when they pick up their mail every day.”
According to police lieutenant Wayne Stevens of the Newmarket Police Department, when investigators got on the site, they could faintly hear the elderly woman calling for help when they knocked.
When officers arrived at the house, they discovered the woman stuck behind belongings on her bedroom floor.
Kayla was rushed to the hospital for dehydration and hypothermia, and many have hailed her a “hero” for her quick thinking.
“She saved this lady’s life without a doubt,” Stevens added. “That’s part of being a mail carrier in a small community and taking your career to the next level.” She did an excellent job.”
Meanwhile, Kayla told CNN, “Newmarket is a beautiful little town.” Everyone looks out for one another.”
Following the incident, Stevens stressed the importance of ‘health checks’ in the community.
A wellness check is when a police officer calls a person’s home after concerns have been raised by friends, family, or a neighbor, for example.
According to Stevens, if you are concerned about a neighbor, you must notify the police.
“They should speak anything if they notice something,” he stated.
“A lot of people think they’re disturbing the cops, but it’s our job.”
One person commented on the incident: “That’s pretty cool. I appreciate it when people are dedicated about their work.”
“Thank you Kayla for your service!” said another.
A third person added, “How highly attentive and caring!”
